cool building

600 north fairbanks keeps it cool in streeterville

world-renowned “star-chitect” helmut jahn’s award-winning steel, concrete and glass tower turned heads when it went on the market in the fall of 2005.  41 gleaming stories with 212 units, its sleek glass “skin” reflects the energy and imagery of its streeterville surroundings.  in january 2008 chicago tribune architecture critic blair kamin said“helmut jahn had redefined the skyscraper formula with his first condo tower in chicago." kamin described 600 as "a quietly elegant wedge of glass that conspicuously outclasses all the other high-rises being built around it.  it is the latest chapter in chicago’s ongoing invention of the glass house, a story that began in 1951 with mies van der rohe’s dazzling steel-and-glass apartment buildings at 860 and 880 north lake shore drive.”

the nearly sold-out building is a more private setting than many of the surrounding rental buildings, with only 212 units total and no hotel or retail space.  it is luxury living with its superior finishes and all glass curvilinear exterior. situated in the heart of streeterville and northwestern memorial hospital campus, 600 is only two blocks from lake michigan and michigan avenue's prime shopping, and walking distance from navy pier, millennium park and oak street.

600 fairbanks’ standard options include 10-foot-high ceilings (11 – 13 feet for the penthouses) with dramatic 6'9"-wide floor-to-ceiling windows, sub-zero, wolf, and miele stainless steel appliances along with snaidero cabinetry, hardwood flooring throughout, and marble master bathrooms with waterworks fixtures.  not to mention the rooftop amenities floor which houses a lake view fitness center, indoor lap pool, wraparound sun deck with sweeping views of the lake and city, and lounge.  600 fairbanks offers tenants bike storage and storage lockers, heated private garage parking, and 24-hour door staff.  there is even an indoor dog run.  schatz development’s modern gem was featured in the april 16th, 2006 new york times article on the front page of the real estate section, along with santiago calatrava's proposed (now seemingly defunct) fordham spire.

rentals go quickly in this building so you’ll need to act fast if you want to be counted among its elite tenants.  average prices for a standard two bedroom rental will run you $3000-$3500/month.  right now there is only one available in the building but it’s in the preferred northeast corner tier.
