Chicago Bike Lanes

Well, we have to hand it to our newest, bestest buddy (and “big toe”), Rahm Emanuel, for getting things done on Kinzie Avenue.  For the better part of a month now, Chicago’s first divided bike lanes or (“cycle tracks”) have been easing the morning commute for, and increasing the safety of, local bicyclists.  With the benefit of a $3.2 million federal grant, the city now has its first stretch of an anticipated 100 new miles of bike lanes.

The cycle tracks on Kinzie originate at the six-corner intersection with...

We certainly don’t purport to speak for the whole Chicago renter community, but when we at domu are safely secluded in our apartments on a Friday afternoon, we love to crank up the stereo and trounce around the bedroom playing air guitar to frenetic death metal songs like “...

Submit A Haiku, Win McCartney Tickets

We are prone to hyperbole here at domu, but we think we’re being modest when we say that Paul McCartney is probably the most important cultural icon of the last century and one of the greatest-ever composers of popular music.  In the rock ‘n’ roll realm, he certainly ranks as one of the best singers and bassists ever to occupy the field.  So we’ve decided to give away a free pair of...

Decoding The Chicago Street Grid System

In 1909, the City of Chicago decided to fight back against the growing menace of local residents continually getting lost and throwing temper tantrums.  To put an end to this epidemic, it created a completely new and foolproof address system.

Here’s how it works: The epicenter of the Chicago street grid is the intersection of State and Madison Streets in the heart of the Loop.  The addresses on all east-west streets are prefixed with the words “east” or “west,” depending on whether they fall east or west of...

We are proud to announce that Elisa Marszalek has been awarded two tickets to the Pitchfork Music Festival for suffering through a roommate that would have sent any of us at domu running for the hills.  Privacy and other concerns preclude us from offering specifics, but suffice it to say that we’d prefer daily water-boarding to the experience poor Elisa endured.

This week, we shared the abundance of “crazy roommate” stories that we collected with our in-house battery of podiatrists, urologists, tax lawyers, duct tape artists

Here at domu, we dig live music just as much as the next guy.  So we’ll be right in our element on Saturday, July 30, when Ahhh! Pilsen 2011 (yes, that’s its name) returns as a live music festival, featuring a wild and electrifying array of independent local artists.  From noon until three in the morning, first on an outdoor stage at 18th and Morgan and later at Simone’s Bar, live bands...

Anyone strolling down Superior Street in River North the past few months would have been hard-pressed to miss the construction of the Poetry Foundation's new digs.  Thanks to a generous $200 million donation from pharmaceutical heiress Ruth Lilly, the Foundation had the luxury of splurging on a contemporary new building that would further its mission to promote the pleasures of poetry to new generations of readers.  And now the day has finally come:  The doors were flung open in late June, and the general public now has the opportunity to...

How To Pronounce Chicago Street Names

Chicago has seen such wondrous growth,

With weather often hot or cold, or both.
Tell me, if you were sworn on oath,
Would you live on Burton, or would you live on Goethe?

Gotcha!  It’s actually pronounced “Gur-ta."  Outside of Germans, five-time Jeopardy champions, and bus drivers, not a lot of local folk know that.  “But what’s in a name?” wrote William Shakespeare.  Just like Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, he has a Chicago street named after him.  Except, unlike Goethe, most people can pronounce his name....

We've randomly selected the winner of our bike giveaway from Do-Division, and the winner is . . . .
