Darien was incorporated in 1969 and is also governed by the council and aldermanic system, similar to the city of Chicago. There are seven wards in Darien, each represented by one alderman. The town offers free leaf and branch pickup and incentives for green and eco-friendly practices such as recycling.

Driving is the easiest way to get around Darien. Illinois's expansive highway system means renters can get to Chicago by car via I-290, I-355, or I-55. Darien is 22 miles southwest of the city of Chicago. Darien is also 20 miles away from Chicago's O'Hare International Airport.
