The Murder Of Eric Morro
The Murder Of Eric Morro
On February 3, 1993, 19 year-old eric morro was shot and killed at this intersection in gang-related violence. a 13 year-old boy named Thaddeus jimenez was tried as an adult and convicted of the crime, or, more precisely, "wrongly convicted" of the crime. although his initial conviction was overturned, he was retried and convicted a second time. he ultimately spent 16 years in prison until attorneys at the northwestern university center for wrongful convictions and katten muchin rosenman convinced the state's attorney that juan carlos torres, now living in Hammond, indiana, was the actual killer. witnesses to the shooting initially implicated torres, and torres confessed, but police and prosecutors ignored that evidence and continued to press their case against jimenez. on january 24, 2012, a federal jury awarded jimenez $25 million in damages in a case he brought against the city of chicago based stemming from his wrongful conviction. in the interim, jimenez was convicted on drug possession charges in december 2011 and is scheduled to be sentenced on february 1, 2012.
