General
Highland Park is an affluent village 23 miles north of downtown Chicago. Drive north through Glencoe or Northbrook, cross Lake-Cook Road (which separates Lake and Cook counties), and you're there. The schools are top-of-the-line, and rental properties generally consist of spacious single-family homes with large yards and fewer offerings of multifamily housing.
The village contains about 600 acres of parkland, including three parks along Lake Michigan with easy access to the beach. The park district maintains an ice rink, an 18-hole golf course (among many private lessons in the vicinity), indoor and outdoor tennis courts, racquetball courts, a nature center, and an aqua park (kids flock from all over the north shore to enjoy the water slides), a gymnastics studio, and an array of other recreational facilities.
The village has its own "downtown," with an array of clothing boutiques, family restaurants (Walker Bros. Original Pancake House and Michael's Chicago Style Red Hots are local legends), doctors' offices, convenience outlets, and a ten-screen cineplex. There's also a massive public library, an art center, a theater, and the Highland Park Hospital. As a bonus, the village is also home to the Ravinia Festival, an outdoor park and music venue that serves as the summer home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Every year the Ravinia Festival serves up an eclectic entertainment schedule that draws picnic-loving concertgoers from all over the Chicagoland area.
Commuters generally rely on the Metra trains, which run to and from Highland Park approximately 25 times a day, from the early morning until late at night; the ride generally takes about 50 minutes. By car, the village can be reached by heading north on the Edens Expressway and continuing on Skokie Highway or, for the leisurely and scenic-minded, meandering along Green Bay Road through the north shore suburbs.
Trivia buffs may know Michael Jordan's palatial 25,000 square-foot mansion can be found in Highland Park at 2700 Point Lane. A great many movies have also been filmed in the village, including "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," "Weird Science," "Sixteen Candles," "Uncle Buck," "Home Alone," "Ordinary People," "Risky Business," and "Kicking & Screaming."
