Around the Neighborhood
General
With industrial roots and a hard-scrabble past as the designated “clearing” zone for freight and cargo coming into the city, Clearing is as improbable a neighborhood as you’re likely to find in Chicago. But today this small community nestled near Midway Airport has a warm residential vibe that’s a far cry from the factories and warehouses of its earliest days. Apartments for rent in Clearing are available in studios, 1, 2 and 3 bedrooms.
History in Clearing
Resurrection Mary is Chicago’s most famous ghost. Over the course of the past eight decades, reports of encounters with Resurrection Mary have made the rounds among local newspapers, radio shows, and websites. The stories typically share a common theme: Someone is driving down 7200 Archer Road between Willow Springs Woods and Resurrection Cemetery when he or she notices a blond-haired, blue-eyed, young woman wearing a white dress and perhaps clutching a small handbag. She asks for a lift, but then, as the car is passing Resurrection Cemetery, she asks to be let out, at which point she vanishes into thin air. In some tellings, she vanishes right out of the passenger seat of the car. Resurrection Mary is said to be the ghost of a young woman who was killed by a hit-and-run driver in the 1930s, right near the cemetery, which is at this address.
