Around the Neighborhood
General
East Village apartments are an assortment of new, historic, refined, and contemporary. The side streets of this Chicago neighborhood are quaint, peaceful, and lined with trees whose branches extend to the other side of the street. East Village has a small physical footprint, so demand for rentals in this admired neighborhood has pushed up the monthly rents, but for a good reason, as East Village has it all. Most East Village rentals were formerly vintage apartments for rent, but many new apartments have been added with attractive finishes and modern conveniences in the past years. In addition to numerous rentals in small apartment buildings throughout East Village, the neighborhood also offers a broad selection of apartments, including luxury apartments, houses for rent, coach houses, and condos for rent from individual landlords. Apartments for rent in East Village are mostly studio, 1-bedroom, 2-bedroom, and three-bedroom rentals. The 4-bedroom apartments for rent are limited and mostly occupy an entire two- or three- flat or a whole house for rent.
East Village caters to many shopping moods. The four thoroughfares—Grand, Chicago, Augusta, and Division—conveniently space out the residential areas' retail, restaurants, and nightlife. You name it -- record stores, vintage shops, boutiques, and art galleries. They're all here.
East Village Chicago is situated near the West Side of Chicago, adjacent to Wicker Park, Noble Square, and Ukrainian Village. A rapidly growing neighborhood filled with a variety of exciting restaurants, bars, and coffee shops for the young and hip crowd while still feeling homey enough to be a place you can kick off your shoes and relax. The city designated a section of East Village that includes N Winchester Ave, N Wolcott Ave, N Honore St, and N Hermitage Ave between W Chicago Ave and W Division St a landmark on January 11, 2006. This was created to safeguard the character of the architecture found in this area.
Things get busier on the northern edge, where East Village ends and Wicker Park begins. Streets can be a bit cramped for parking, and the Division CTA Blue Line station at the three-way intersection of Milwaukee, Ashland, and Division is the closest train available. Over here, the buses are your friend. CTA buses available in east Village are #9, #50, #66, #70. The bike lanes along Milwaukee are a great option for heading downtown or up north into Wicker Park, Bucktown, and Logan Square.
Grocery shopping is stress-free in East Village, with all apartments within walking distance from Mariano's on Chicago Avenue, Target on Division, and Jewel along Milwaukee. Plus, there are numerous smaller neighborhood shops along the main streets.
Several charming neighborhood parks, including Commercial Club Park, Honore Park, Greenhouse Garden, Frankie Machine Garden, and the large Eckhart Park, is located just to the east along Chicago Avenue.

History in East Village
Goldblatt Bros. Department Store
Maurice and Nathan Goldblatt opened their first Goldblatt Bros. department store at the corner of Chicago and Ashland Avenues in 1914. According to the Encyclopedia of Chicago, Goldbatt's sales at its five department stores exceeded $20 million annually by 1933. The company peaked in the 1970s when there were 47 stores, 8,000 employees, and nearly $250 million in annual sales. However, it had trouble competing with discount chain stores, and the company liquidated in 2003.
Oh, Henry Candy Bar
In 1920, the fledgling Williamson Candy Company introduced a new confection known as the Oh Henry candy bar. By 1923, the Oh Henry was the best-selling treat in the country. Headquartered here at 1038 North Ashland Avenue, the Williamson Candy Company produced a half a million Oh Henry bars every nine hours. When they first hit the market, Oh Henry bars sold for 10 cents each, double the cost of competing chocolate bars, but consumers went wild for them nonetheless. Accounts differ in how the candy bar was bestowed with its unique name. However, the most popular theory is that a young boy named Henry visited the original candy store and flirted with the young female employees, who would constantly roll their eyes and say, “Oh, Henry!" (And for all you trivia hounds out there, in the Seinfeld television series, a woman named Sue Ellen Mischke played a role as the heiress to the Oh Henry candy bar fortune.)
